News from Nurse Luna

In these first weeks of school, I have been able to introduce myself to all students except half the 6th graders. I've reviewed with them our School's expectations for when to see the Nurse: Urgent and Immediate needs DURING class time include the 5 B's:

Burning up in fever
Breathing problems
Broken
Bleeding
Barfing and allergic reactions

Less urgent need visits will be encouraged during Passing Times only. I will send students with late passes when they honor this system, so they won't be penalized for that tardy, as long as they aren't using the Passing Period for social time and then coming to the Nurse in order to avoid a Tardy Penalty!

This triage system facilitates kids being in class as much as possible and not missing valuable instruction. It helps to train them to build discipline as they practice patterns of sticking with a job for 45 min at a time, very reasonable responsibility at this age.

If you send your student to school ill, I will expect them to make it through at least two classes before determining they need to go home. So if they come to me as soon as they get off the bus or during the first two periods, I'll likely send them back to class. Please consider, in the morning before coming, if it is in their best interest to attend school that day. Students may attend school with minor illness symptoms, but keep in mind that adequate rest at the onset of symptoms will increase their chances of a shorter duration of illness and also of sharing the illness with others!

If you would like me to give your student OTC meds for headaches or minor illness symptoms, please use this link to fill out an easy OTC Consent Form that will be valid for this school year only.
